Supporting Sport Climbing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!

The Connection of Sport Climbing and Kazo City

１.The Opportunity to Take the Initiative in Sport Climbing

In 1996, more than 20 years ago, Kazo City was given the opportunity by the Japan Mountaineering Association to be the venue for the 2004 “Sai no Kuni National Sports Meet”. This began the process of Kazo City becoming known as the “Climbing Community”.

２.Development of Climbing Facilities

Upon considering the significance of the National Sports Meet, Kazo City decided to erect long-lasting climbing facilities that would allow the citizens of Kazo to enjoy sport climbing for a lifetime. As a result, the city constructed four highest-class domestic indoor climbing walls – two at 13m, and two at 12m high - in order to promote sport climbing.

３.Kazo, the “Climbing Community”

Kazo is the only city to have hosted the international Lead and Bouldering World Cup events. Additionally, top climbers from across Japan have gathered here to compete in the Japan Cup, the Junior Olympics, and the National High School Climbing Championships. Because of this, Kazo City is often referred to as the “Holy Land” in the Japan climbing world.
